Johann Baptist Wanhal
Litania in D Nokki 87 [Weinmann XXa:D1]
Wanhal ?
Nokki 87
Weinmann XXa:D1
Attributed names: Joseph Haydn, Johann Evangelist Jaumann
Authenticity: Probably Authentic
This work has survived in a number of copies.
Stylistically, the attribution appears plausible. The single
attributions to Joseph Haydn and Johann Evangelist Jaumann (1765-1848)
need not be taken seriously.
Variants
The work survives with some variationt text. Nokki 87b
contains alternative parts for the singers which uses a text for a
litany on the names of Jesus. This resembles but is not identical to the
Litany of the Holy Name of Jesus. Nokki 87c has the text in one
movement changed to a prayer to John Nepomuk. In both cases, the
original text is also included. There are no further musical differences
of consequence between the versions.
Christological Variant
In this variant the textual content of several movements has been changed. These are listed below, with changes boldfaced.

St. John Nepomuk Variant
In this variant the text in the Sancta Maria movement is as follows (changes boldfaced):
Sancta Maria Dei genitrix, ora pro nobis.
Sancta virgo virginum, ora pro nobis.
Sancte Joannes Neopmucene, ora pro nobis.
Mariani Cultus amabilis promotor, ora pro nobis.
Nostri temporis magne thaumaturge, ora pro nobis.
Nove Joannes silentiarius, ora pro nobis.
Wind instruments
Woodwind instruments are only found in some few versions
of this work: CZ-Pnm IX E 254 mentions clarinets and CZ-Bm A 36030
oboes. Unfortunately, in CZ-Bm A 36030 the oboe parts have been lost,
and the clarinet parts in CZ-Pnm IX E 254 were not continued beyound the
title of the parts.
Judging from Wanhal's other works and the fact that CZ-Bm
A 36030 is an early copy of the work, it seems most likely that the
work originally contained oboes, which in at least one case was
performed by clarinets. At present, these parts are not known to have
survived.
