Authenticity: Probably Authentic
This is one of Wanhal's large-scale masses, whose authenticity can be reasonably well ascertained stylistically (in particular, 'Domine Deus Agnus Dei' is set as part of the Qui tollis, a solution not found in the works of any other Viennese composers of this era). The work survives in a number of copies, whose locations stretch over several countries, and there are no known counter-attributions. There are therefore no reasonable reasons to doubt the attribution.
Variants
This mass exists both in Eb and D.Whereas the remaining movements have simply been transposed down a semitone in the latter, Christe has been transposed from Ab to A, so as to use virtually the same notation, but with different key signatures.
In this context, it is quite obvious that the version in D is a later adaptation for the following reasons:
* It is only found in peripheral locations (Switzerland,
Poland). It is as of yet unknown whether these versions arose separately
or if there is a connection between them.
* The Einsiedeln
manuscript contains a solo viola (with bassoon suggested as a possible
replacement instrument) in both Eb and D, with the latter being less
detailed and in all things bearing evidence of having been made after
the former.
* In his 'Domine Deus' masses Wanhal avoided keys with
more than four flats. For this reason, this mass does not employ the
tonic minor for the Domine Deus Agnus Dei and Agnus Dei, where this
would have been normal. This makes sense in Eb but not in D. This is
especially so because the Agnus Dei, which was originally in Cm, now
ends up being in Bm (Hm), which goes further in the sharp direction than
any other movement in the 'Domine Deus' masses.
Note that two geographically disparate manuscripts with the work in D survives.
Cataloguing
Nokki 36b was previously known as Nokki 26, as it was not possible to survey this document before the numbering was made. It has not yet been possible to study the Krzeszów copy, and it is possible that this represents a different solution to the question of how to transpose the work.
Weinmann catalogued this work thrice: in Eb, Weinmann XIX:Es1 used the soprano incipit, Es3 the violin incipit; the D version was catalogued as Weinmann XIX:D7.

This copy contain parts for clarinets instead of oboes (the parts are, for the most part, identical), as well as two horn parts not found elsewhere. These appear to be slightly elaborated versions of the trumpet parts, and are probably a local addition.

This manuscript suggests that the viola solo can be played by a bassoon. This solo was written out both in Eb and D, with the former being the more detailed version.
