Johann Baptist Wanhal
Missa in D Nokki 19
Wanhal ?
Nokki 19
Weinmann deest
Authenticity: Possibly Authentic
Only one copy of this mass survives. The musical style is
plausible, but the shaping of the piece, with run-on movements and few
internal changes in tempo, key and time signature, is highly irregular.
It cannot, however, be ruled entirely out that this was a stylistic
experiment. The use of a retexted Credo for the Et resurrexit is also
unusual for Wanhal, who instead normally rewrote the music when he
wanted them to be based on the same music. However, this proceedure is
known from the masses of his friend Dittersdorf (see MacIntyre1986).
Instrumentation
In addition to the instruments mentioned on the title
page, the extant manuscript contains several other parts. These are
likely to be later additions; a more detailed outline can be found in

Cln 1 has been lost, and the following parts added: Fl 1, Cor 1, Cor 2, Principale. The Fl 1 is based on the Vln 1 part, and it is possible that a Fl 2 has also been present. The Principale contains
a deeper trumpet part, and is unlikely to have been intended as a
replacement for Cln 1. All the parts are more likely to have been added
in an attempt to augment the scoring of the work, at a time when there
were no missing parts. The correct Timp part on the inside of the
wrapper proves that this is not a misplaced work.
