Johann Baptist Wanhal

Missa in C Nokki 14 [Weinmann XIX:C1]

(Missa Sancti Hieronymi)

Wanhal ?
Nokki 14
Weinmann XIX:C1
JHI C17

Dedicatees: St. Jerome, Virgin Mary

Authenticity: probably authentic

The number of extant sources and stylistic properties of the piece strongly point towards Wanhal as the most likely composer. A single manuscript whose exact location is unknown, attributed this work to Joseph Haydn; this may safely be disregarded.

Variants

The version found in Ottobeuren (published by J. Butz Verlag; see bibliography) contains a new Gloria movement and a re-texted Kyrie, which is repeated da capo after the Gloria. This is almost certainly a local variant.

Dedications

The manuscript found in Ottobeuren bears the title "Missa Sancti Hieronymi". St. Jerome may be either Eusebius Jerome (347-420), an important translator of the bible into Latin and patrons of scholars, librarians and schoolchildren, or Gerolamo Emiliani (1486-1537), patron of abandoned children and orphans. Emiliani was canonised only in 1767, and although the mass is not likely to date from the first decade thereafter, the dedication may well be to the new saint. The attribution is only found in this copy, and there is little reason to believe that the attribution was made by Wanhal. This is likewise the case with the Marian dedication.
