Johann Baptist Wanhal

Missa in C Nokki 05 [Weinmann XIX:C11/12]

(Missa brevis festivalis)

Wanhal ?
Nokki 05
Weinmann XIX:C11
Weinmann XIX:C12

Authenticity: Probably Authentic

This work has survived in two copies attributed to Wanhal, and with no known counterattributions. Whilst the shape of the work is somewhat unusual, one also finds many traits typical of Wanhal in the treatment of fugue and cadences, and the attribution is therefore appears to be stronger than one might assume.

A Note on Weinmann

Alexander Weinmann did not have the opportunity to study many of the sacred works by Wanhal in person, and often had to rely on incipits alone. This was in particular the case for works stored in the old East Bloc. For this reason he, listed the same mass as C11 and C12 in his catalogue, as one source only gave a violin incipit, the other only vocal incipits.
